Synopsis: “Altering certain motor vehicle registration fees for certain classes of motor vehicles.”
MCAA Read: This bill, if passed, would require the MVA to reduce fees across the board for vehicle registration in Maryland, effective 1 July 2026. Specifically, it reduces the registration fees for Street Rod (Class N) tags to $25.00 and for Historic (Class L) tags to $25.50.
MCAA recommendation: MCAA strongly but conditionally endorses this legislation. MCAA supports the Class N fee reduction and also supports the Class L reduction with the following condition: language in SB0896 for Class L uses the current law on these vehicles, with Historic vehicles being manufactured no later than December 31, 1999. This language will have to be amended if bills in the current legislative session move the 1999 cut-off to a 25-year rolling definition of historic and qualifying as Class L.
